Who is a Good Candidate for a Smile Makeover?

A smile makeover can significantly improve the way that the teeth look and function. Modern-day dentistry has allowed for the evolution of multiple procedures to enhance the teeth and ensure that they function properly. However, it is good to know that there are certain smile makeover procedures that may not work for everyone. Understanding who is a good candidate can be very beneficial to someone considering their options. Getting familiar with the associated determining factors early on can help avoid surprises or disappointments throughout the process.

Smile makeover candidates

Keep reading to learn more about who makes a good candidate for a smile makeover. The following information plays a big role in the entire process.

Healthy adult patients

Adult patients are typically the only candidates for smile makeovers. Children are rarely able to undergo any type of transformative work unless a serious condition or accident is present. Adult teeth are fully grown in, which ensures that roots, nerves and other developmental factors will not be at risk.

Additionally, the adult patient must be in good standing health in order to undergo a smile makeover. Good health means there are little to no pre-existing health conditions that could put the patient at risk. Heart and blood conditions cannot be present because they could interfere with certain smile makeover procedures.

Patients with missing teeth

Another type of person that makes a good candidate for a smile makeover is an adult patient that has missing teeth. Oftentimes, those with missing teeth are elderly or near so. When there are little to no teeth left in the mouth, the dentist is able to provide more of a smile makeover.

Replacement options can be considered and administered to truly transform the mouth. The most popular smile makeover treatments for those with missing teeth are dentures, dental implants, bridges and even implant-supported dentures! Each of these options works best when the patient has little to no teeth.

Patients that have healthy gums

Another important factor that is required in someone considering a smile makeover is healthy gums. Healthy gums are required in smile makeover patients because the gums are extremely susceptible to disease. If they are not healthy, there is a higher risk of infection during a smile makeover procedure, which could do long-term damage to the entire mouth.

Gum health can be restored by visiting a periodontist or a general dentist for routine care. Certain procedures may be required in order for the gums to get back to being normal. Some of the most common include scaling and root planing or oral surgery to graft the gums. Once the gums are deemed healthy, a smile makeover can likely take place.
