Cracks and other types of damage come with the territory of owning dentures. However, it is important to keep in mind that you should never try to fix your dentures without first calling a general dentist. You should also remember that denture cracks are common and can happen to anyone. Here is some advice on how to proceed if it happens to you.

What to do for a crack in a denture

When a denture crack appears, the first thing to do is contact a general dentist. While talking to the dentist, the patient should run through what happened and explain where the crack is on the dentures. From there, an appointment will be scheduled to properly repair the damage. Depending on the severity of the damage, the dentures may require mending by a prosthodontist to ensure the dentures continue to fit well. For example, if the dentures crack and break in half, that will require more skilled repair work. However, for small cracks or other minor types of damage, there are temporary repair tips that can be done at home.

Quick fixes for a denture crack

When a crack develops in dentures, there are several temporary fixes that a denture wearer can try at home. That is helpful if the general dentist cannot be reached at the time. For example, denture repair kits sold at local drugstores are designed for emergencies. These kits are ideal for temporarily mending cracks. When shopping for a repair kit, a person should try to find one that is FDA-approved for dental work. Oftentimes these kits come equipped with bonding material.

These repair kits are great when denture wearers are in a pinch and cannot get in to see a prosthodontist for a day or two. However, even with a repair kit, it is important to remember that any home repair is temporary. Even with emergency bonding material, cracked dentures will not be totally repaired. Dentures should always be taken to a prosthodontist to avoid future dental issues down the road.

Avoid future cracks

Like many dental issues, denture cracks can be prevented. Even though dentures tend to break down over time, they last longer when they are properly cared for. For starters, dentures should always be brushed regularly, rinsed, and then soaked overnight. To prevent cracks from dropping dentures, try filling the sink with water. That way, if the dentures accidentally fall into the sink, the water will lessen the impact. That will reduce the risk of cracks and other damage.

Take care of your dentures

Accidents with dentures are going to happen. There is no avoiding them. Sometimes, those accidents will result in cracks that will eventually need the care of a prosthodontist. A few temporary home fixes can help you mend your dentures until you can have them properly repaired. If you have recently cracked your dentures, contact a general dentist for a consultation.
