Orthodontics: How Does Invisalign® Work to Straighten Teeth?

Many people would like to have straight teeth, but orthodontics treatment can be intimidating. If you have crowding, you might feel self-conscious about smiling. The good news is that Invisalign® is one option to help you straighten your teeth. Keep reading to find out more about this orthodontics treatment and how it works.
How it works
The trays are made from plastic that is customized to fit the patient’s mouth. The dentist will create 3D models of the teeth and do X-rays. Then a series of plastic aligners will be created to work throughout the orthodontics treatment. As the teeth get straighter, the patient will move on to the next set of aligners. Each set will be worn for two weeks and for 22 hours each day.
The aligners will push the teeth into position. The teeth will move about a quarter of a millimeter each time a new tray is applied. The length of the treatment time can vary depending on the amount of movement needed. Some people might need just a couple of months while others might need a couple of years. The dentist will work with the Invisalign company to create the right treatment plan.
Who can have Invisalign?
Even those who have never had orthodontics treatment can benefit from Invisalign. It is also good for those who have had braces in the past but now need more treatment. Invisalign can treat many issues. However, those with severe overcrowding or crossbites may need to talk to their dentists.
This is a good option for those who want to have a straighter smile before an event, like a wedding. While adults and teens can do well with the treatment, it is not recommended for children. Their bones are still growing, and the aligners may not fit properly as the treatment progresses and jaws grow. Before getting Invisalign, patients will want to consult with insurance to see what is covered.
What to expect
The dentist will set up an initial consultation to determine if this is the right option. The dentist will go over the patient’s dental history and might take some photos to get a better idea. The dentist can then create a treatment plan customized to the patient’s needs. Impressions of the mouth will be taken and sent to the lab.
Once the treatment plan has been created and approved, Invisalign will use 3D modeling to create the aligners. These will be sent to the dentist’s office. The patient will come in for regular treatment. The dentist will show the patient the right way to care for and wear the aligners.
Choosing the right orthodontics treatment
It is a good idea to have good oral hygiene habits during the treatment, so your teeth are healthy. Keep the aligners on except when eating and cleaning the teeth. This will help you to benefit from the treatment. Making an appointment with your dentist can help you find out more.
