Invisalign Compared To Other Teeth Straightening Treatments

Invisalign Mableton, GA

Invisalign® has quickly grown to be one of the most popular ways to straighten teeth that are crooked, crowded or unevenly spaced. However, unlike braces, Invisalign® has not been around for nearly as long, thus resulting in questions about which option to choose. Keep reading to learn more about the differences and similarities of Invisalign® compared to other treatments.

How does Invisalign® compare to other treatments?

Below is a quick comparison of Invisalign® to other teeth straightening treatments, such as traditional and clear braces. Review this information when considering different teeth straightening treatments.

Invisalign®

Invisalign® is a type of clear aligners that work to straighten teeth, correct bite issues and address spacing problems. The aligners themselves can be used for both the top and bottom arches of teeth, depending on the patient's specific needs. Over the course of the treatment process, the patient will go through an entire series of clear aligners, changing them out every couple of weeks. All of the teeth will shift together, as Invisalign® is one prosthetic for an entire arch.

At the start of treatment, the entire set is provided to the patient based on the Invisalign® computer technology, which uses impressions to dictate the patient's desired outcome. Invisalign® aligners are removable and do not require any extra special care. Patients are advised to brush and floss regularly and after every meal. Additionally, there is a lot of discipline required on the patient's part since the aligners are removable. Invisalign® is not effective if not worn for at least 22 hours each day.

Clear braces

Clear braces are a comparable option to Invisalign®. They offer the same goal; however, the execution process is much more similar to traditional braces. Using translucent wires and ceramic white brackets, clear braces work by individually shifting each tooth, as opposed to all of the teeth at once. The brackets are cemented onto the front of each tooth and the wires are fed through. Tightening adjustments are done every few weeks based on how much the teeth shift.

Traditional braces

Traditional braces are very different than Invisalign®. Metal brackets and wires are used to shift each tooth individually, the same as with clear braces. Traditional braces are the most common teeth straightening treatment as they have been around the longest; however, they can draw attention to the mouth, which is a common disadvantage for most individuals.

Choosing the best option

Invisalign® is a great treatment option due to its ability to be discrete and flexible. However, not everyone is an eligible candidate. Severe cases of crookedness or protrusion may have to be treated with traditional or clear braces as there is more force applied, whereas Invisalign® works well for minor to moderate cases of crookedness, gaps or crowding.
