Caring for Children’s Teeth: Recommendations from a Dentist

As children grow up, it’s often hard to know the best ways to care for their teeth. Children aren’t typically keen on the idea of caring for their teeth. Maybe they are afraid that they will harm them or maybe they just don’t want to take the time to clean them. Whatever the reason may be, it is still important that their teeth are cared for properly.

Dentists are trained in knowing how to calm the nerves and anxieties of their patients, this is where pediatric dentists come in hand. They take special training in pediatric dentistry because children aren’t the same type of patient as an adult would be. These dentists aim to make a child feel comfortable while also hoping to help them want to keep their teeth clean.

Caring for your child’s teeth may seem difficult, but the following tips can greatly benefit any parent who is struggling to do so.

Caring for children’s teeth

Make it enjoyable

Most children only want to partake in something if they find it enjoyable. Finding different ways for a child to care for their teeth can be helpful. Play a favorite song that is about two minutes long so the child can brush along to it. Or, provide a small incentive such as a sticker. Children find it easier to do things that they may not want to do if the experience can be made enjoyable.

Brush with them!

If a child realizes that tooth brushing time isn’t just for them then they may be more inclined to do it. As important as it is for a child to brush their teeth, it is just as important for an adult to do so too. If the child sees that their parent or guardian is also brushing their teeth then they are more likely to do the same.

Avoid overly sugary foods and beverages

While almost every child does love a candy bar or that sugary juice, it’s actually very important to not overdo the sugar intake. Too much sugar can harm the body in general, but especially the teeth. Because most children also don’t follow as strict of a dental care routine, it’s also important that they avoid too much sugar because they aren’t keeping up as regularly with ridding of the sugars.

Floss

Children are typically sensitive to flossing because it isn’t done very frequently. However, if a parent helps their child floss starting at an early age then they are more likely to continue doing so throughout their life. Flossing is essential in maintaining healthy oral hygiene so gently flossing a child’s teeth daily will surely keep their teeth and gums in great condition.

Maintaining a healthy dental routine is hard enough as is, let alone doing so for a child. However, there are many different ways that a person can care for a child’s teeth and it doesn’t have to be difficult. Knowing what steps to take to keep a child’s teeth in good condition will only benefit them in the long run.
